Environmental Impacts of Milking Cows in Latvia

چکیده

Increasing pressures surrounding efficiency and sustainability are key global drivers in dairy farm management strategies. However, for numerous resource-based, social, economic reasons sustainable intensification strategies herd-size dependent. In this study, we investigated the environmental impacts of Latvia’s farms with different practices. The herd size-dependent groups varied from extensively managed small herds 1–9 cows, extending to stepwise more intensively 10–50, 51–100, 100–200, over 200 milking cows. aim is compare size-based production on farms. results show that gross greenhouse gas emissions differ by 29%: 1.09 kg CO2 equivalents (CO2e) per raw milk 51–100 down 0.84 CO2e/kg than land use differs even more—the largest 2.25 times less smallest Global warming potential, marine eutrophication, terrestrial acidification, ecotoxicity were highest mid-sized If current domestic, farm-based protein feeds be substituted imported soy feed (one most popular high-protein feeds) Latvian would significantly increase, e.g., increase 18% potential 43%. Environmental policy approaches steering should consider overall effects operation size quality, order support best practices each type steer systematic change country. limitations study linked national data availability (e.g., production, heifer breeding, differences among regards soil type, manure management, proximity or aquatic habitats) methodological shortcomings excluding carbon sequestration, proxy allocation, social biodiversity life-cycle assessment). Further research needed improve allocation method, provide farm-size-specific information outputs, storage, handling.

Milking-time Test – Methodology and Assessment of Vacuum Recordings during Machine Milking of Dairy Cows

The aim of the study was to improve the basic understanding and the methodology of routine milking-time testing by determining the required sampling frequency and number of cows and milkings needed to be measured in order to yield representative results. Milking-time tests represent the most direct method to validate the system vacuum of a milking machine, both the aptitude of vacuum production...

Comparative Study on Milking Ability of Sahiwal Cows and Murrah Buffaloes under Hand and Machine Milking

Present study was undertaken to compare the effect of two different milking methods (hand vs. machine milking) on milking ability in Murrah buffaloes and Sahiwal cows. 30 lactating Sahiwal cows and 30 lactating Murrah Buffaloes were selected and divided into four equal groups having 15 animals each. 15 animals of each species were subjected to machine milking and 15 animals of each species were...

Evaluation of Environmental Impacts in Turkey Production System in Iran

Poultry industry is an important production system due to providing remarkable portion of the human food and protein needs. Considering the necessity of environmental protection, the amount of environmental impacts of a turkey production unit in Iran was determined using life cycle assessment method. The required information were collected through questionnaires and interviews with farm owners....

Adaptability of Dairy Cows to Robotic Milking: a Review

robotic milking systems (rMS) offer an innovative approach to improve productivity on dairy farms. rMS will influence the future growth of farms, the nature of husbandry employed and the quality of life on family farms. For farms using hired labour and located near industrial centres, RMS may contribute to the reduction of wage costs. As this technology is very expensive, and little is known re...

The effect of omitted milking on the behaviour of cows in the context of cluster attachment failure during automatic milking.

In robotic milking there is always a slight chance of failure to attach the milking cluster. Attachment failure is most likely for cows whose udder conformation is less convenient for robot attachment. In general, after milking failure cows try to revisit the milking robot if they are not sent to a separate area. Since it is difficult to estimate the effect of milking failure on such a cow and ...
